Slayyyter - WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA
Tracks 14
Runtime 43mins
Favorite Tracks DANCE..., BEAT UP CHANEL$, CANNIBALISM!, CRANK, YES GODDD, UNKNOWN LOVERZ, $T. LOSER
With her first album in three years, Slayyyter has made an album for boys who loved the hotline Miami video games and are now Girls who party on weeknights.
Electronic music has been coming back into the public ear in full force and, though the occasional restrained house beat is delicious when used right, the people crave friction.
WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA mixes that undeniable party girl pop sound with blood and neon, filthy synthesizers that reject sterility at every turn. Distortion takes center stage here. Every piece of the production grinds like a motor running in your chest, it’s gritty in a way that exfoliates your brain. One of my favorite examples is the drop on $T. LOSER. The melody is almost nonexistent, beat straightforward, bass pulsing and thrumming like a living handful of gravel. It doesn’t try to be digestible. Producer Jordan Palmer (who also worked on Dedicated, my favorite Carly Rae Jepsen album), leans directly into the Brit-punk influence of French Electroclash, fully committing to the crunch and as a result, breathing so much life into all of these tracks.
CANNIBALISM! even goes as far as to use live instruments, the warm groove of the bass guitar and the brass tick of hi hats, as well as the slight imperfections in the recordings, providing a perfect canvas for the real star of the show, Slayyyter herself.
There is so much color and variety in her vocal performances on this album. On UNKNOWN LOVERZ she uses a super thin and soft voice. There’s a girlish giddiness to this track, her voice layered with reverb as she sings about a crush to one of the bubblier poppier riffs on this album, with splashes of acoustic guitar for added romance. It’s an interesting set of qualities for her voice to take on, especially as someone known more for tracks like No Comma, which features her usual k-pop-rap meets Brittany spears vocal.
But the most interesting part is where it falls on the album. The track before it is YES GODDD, and on that track Slayyyter doesn’t sing at all. Most of the track is spoken, half-whispered, like a threat just for you given in a crowded room. But her voice rises in volume just before the drop, and the track explodes. She full on screams, with a force that would put many metal vocalists to shame. The bass synth kicks up an octave, distorted into a serration you can feel on your tongue like licking a steak knife. Sidechained to the kick it pulses in and out. To put it in simplest terms, it’s fuckin hardcore, man. The energy and raw thrill in her vocals is truly insane.
And she doesn’t let us forget her pop talent either. Her vocals on DANCE… have an infectious seductive S&M era Rhianna spin to them, sliding effortlessly into her head voice with resonance shifts, vibrato, all the bells and whistles to end the chorus. Choosing it as the first song on the album too as if to remind everyone who the fuck we’re dealing with. The vocals on $T LOSER are an undeniable and beautifully executed nod to Lady Gaga’s Poker Face style. The last track BRITTANY MURPHY even has an almost ABBA spin to it.
Slayyyter’s range is undeniable, the production is breathtaking, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA is one of the best pop albums I have heard in a long time. Using the best parts of the party girls of the past and cranking them all way up to give the party girls of today exactly what we want.
Other Albums from this month I enjoyed
Fcukers - Ö
- Everyone's favorite house duo finally drops their debut album, blending house, garage, and even a little Moby style trip hop. Beautiful progression as an album, fun all the way through.
Underscores - U
- Yet another brilliant dance pop album, but more in the EDM hyperpop direction. Not as much of a sprawling masterpiece as her previous album, but it distills the fun of her previous poppier tracks into one delicious shot.
Kilu - PRINT
- Radiohead meets shoegaze. Shimmering soaring and wonderfully cathartic.
Girl Scout - Brink
- Debut album from a very promising indie rock group, just in time for summer. Fans of Momma, Wednesday, and Feeble Little Horse will love this one.
